The journey of Ecotrio did not begin with a company registration or a business plan. In many ways, it started back in 2018, when one of our founders moved to Sweden to pursue a master’s degree.
During those years of study and professional growth, a strong ambition remained constant — to build something meaningful that could solve real-world challenges and create lasting impact.
In 2021, that ambition evolved into action. A conversation with a close friend, Maltesh, who was also living in Sweden at the time, sparked the beginning of a shared entrepreneurial journey. Together, we explored numerous business ideas, determined to find an opportunity that aligned with both innovation and purpose.
🔍Exploring Possibilities
Like many aspiring entrepreneurs, our path was far from straightforward. We initially explored opportunities in electric vehicle charging infrastructure and charging equipment manufacturing. With the EV industry experiencing rapid growth, it appeared to be a promising space with significant potential. We later investigated the possibilities of 3D printing technologies, spending countless hours researching, studying industry trends, and evaluating market opportunities.
While these ideas were exciting, none of them evolved into a sustainable business model. Yet every discussion, research paper, and market analysis brought valuable learning that would eventually shape our future direction.
🚀The Turning Point
The year 2024 became a defining chapter in our story.
Around the same time we began discussing lithium battery recycling, another close friend, Vedanth, reached out from India. Having recently returned from Sweden after completing his master's degree and gaining experience in the battery manufacturing industry, Vedanth shared an idea that immediately caught our attention.
To our surprise, he had been thinking about the very same challenge — lithium battery recycling.
What started as a simple conversation quickly became a shared vision.
With Vedanth joining the team, Ecotrio truly began to take shape. The three of us immersed ourselves in understanding battery recycling technologies, connecting with researchers, studying industry reports, and conducting extensive market surveys to evaluate both the technical and commercial aspects of the industry.
📚Learning Before Building
Our research revealed an important reality.
While lithium battery recycling represents a significant opportunity for the future, the industry faces two major barriers: limited supply availability and the substantial capital investment required to establish large-scale recycling operations. For an early-stage startup, entering the sector directly would be both complex and resource-intensive.
Rather than rushing ahead, we chose to step back and rethink our strategy.
This led us toward a broader and equally important challenge — electronic waste recycling, commonly known as WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment).
♻️Understanding the E-Waste Ecosystem
Before building a solution, we wanted to fully understand the problem.
We travelled across different cities, met local collectors, interacted with recyclers, and studied procurement networks, pricing structures, and supply chain dynamics. Through these experiences, one fact became increasingly clear: India generates enormous volumes of e-waste, yet a significant portion continues to flow through the informal sector.
This observation helped us identify both a challenge and an opportunity. We realized that meaningful impact would require collaboration across the entire ecosystem rather than working in isolation.
🌍The Birth of Ecotrio
Even choosing a company name became an unexpected challenge.
We wanted a name that represented the three founders while reflecting our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. After exploring countless options, we finally found one that resonated with all of us: "Ecotrio".
The name symbolizes three individuals united by a common purpose — creating innovative solutions to environmental challenges while building a more sustainable future.
🔄A Different Approach to Recycling
As we continued our industry research, we identified another major obstacle: the complexity of obtaining licenses and regulatory approvals within the recycling sector.
We believe that simplifying these processes can encourage more responsible businesses to participate in sustainable waste management and accelerate the growth of the formal recycling ecosystem.
From the very beginning, our philosophy has been different.
We do not see the informal sector as competition. Instead, we view it as an essential part of the solution.
The informal sector already plays a critical role in waste collection and material recovery. Our goal is to collaborate with collectors and local stakeholders by providing awareness, education, partnerships, and access to safer working practices. We believe that meaningful environmental progress can only be achieved when growth is inclusive and benefits everyone involved.
đź”®Looking Ahead
At Ecotrio, our vision extends beyond recycling.
Our immediate mission is to address one of the industry's most significant challenges: reverse logistics. By building efficient systems that connect e-waste generation with responsible recycling channels, we aim to create a stronger and more sustainable foundation for the entire ecosystem.
Once this foundation is established, recycling operations can scale more effectively, creating greater environmental and social impact.
🌟Just the Beginning
Our journey is still in its early stages, but every experience has reinforced one important belief:
Sustainability challenges cannot be solved alone.
They require collaboration, persistence, innovation, and the willingness to adapt as new opportunities emerge. Ecotrio was built on these principles, and they continue to guide us as we work toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
This is only the beginning of our story, and we are excited about the journey ahead.
